Pipistrellus was named by Kaup (1829). It is extant. Its type is Vespertilio pipistrellus.
It was assigned to Vespertilionae by Kurten and Anderson (1980); and to Vespertilionidae by Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Sherman (1952), Kurten (1968), Rabon et al. (2000) and Czaplewski et al. (2002).
