Hippopotamus liberiensis was named by Morton (1844). It is extant. It is the type species of Choeropsis.
It was recombined as Hexaprotodon liberiensis by Coryndon (1977) and Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008); it was recombined as Choeropsis liberiensis by Leidy (1853), Boisserie (2005) and Weston and Boisserie (2010).
