Taxonomy
Cardium virginianum was named by Conrad (1839) [DISTRIBUTION: Pliocene-Pleistocene; Florida]. It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Planicardium.
It was recombined as Cardium (Cerastoderma) virginianum by Dall (1900); it was recombined as Planicardium virginianum by Olsson (1967).
