Its type specimen is TMM 41685-11, a tooth (upper third premolar, well preserved except that the roots are broken away), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Rancho El Ocote (Basal), which is in a Hemphillian fluvial claystone/sandstone in the Rancho Viejo Beds Formation of Mexico.

It was synonymized subjectively with Hemiauchenia vera by Montellano (1989); it was recombined as Hemiauchenia guanajuatensis by Ruez (2005).

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
W. W. Dalquest and O. Mooser 1980A tiny camel, approximate!y the size of the modern domestic llama. Differing from Hemphillian and Pleistocene species of Hemiauchenia in smaller size, shorter-crowned teeth, upper P3 with three rather than two roots, and styles of lower molars better developed. Similar to Pleistocene species of Palaeolama in size and basic tooth pattern but styles not as well developed and ectoloph between styles gently convex rather than drawn out into ribs.
