Nandinia was named by Gray (1843). It is extant.

It was assigned to Viverrinae by Mivart (1882); to Aeluroidea by Hunt (1989), Hunt (1998); and to Nandiniidae by Pocock (1933), Morlo et al. (2007), Werdelin and Peigne (2010).
