Taxonomy
Phoca elephantina was named by Molina (1782). It is extant.

It was recombined as Morunga elephantina by Gray (1844), Gray (1850), Gray (1866), Gray (1871); it was recombined as Macrorhinus elephantinus by Scott (1873).
