Taxonomy
Carcharias (Prionodon) was named by Müller and Henle (1841) [non Prionodon Gray 1864 (also attributed to Horsfield 1824) non Prionodon Gray 1864 (also attributed to Horsfield 1824) non Prionodon Gray 1864 (also attributed to Horsfield 1824)]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Prionodon by Gray (1825), Leriche (1942) and Jordan (1963).

It was assigned to Felina by Gray (1825); to Carcharias by Chapman and Pritchard (1904), Eastman (1904) and Chapman and Cudmore (1924); to Carcharidae by Leriche (1942); and to Galeidae by Jordan (1963).
