Orometopus was named by Broegger (1898) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-l O Aren Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Orometopidae by Harrington and Leanza (1957); to Alsataspididae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002).
