Plectofrondicularia was named by Liebus (1902) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 728]. It was considered unknown by Hayward et al. (2012).

It was assigned to Plectofrondicularinae by Cushman (1927); to Foraminiferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Plectofrondiculariidae by Hayward et al. (2012).
