Saratunus was named by Collins et al. (2003). Its type is Saratunus longiorbis.
It was assigned to Portunidae by Collins et al. (2003) and Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006); to Podophthalmidae by Luque et al. (2017); and to Podophthalminae by Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2021).
