Ptaiochen pau

Taxonomy
Ptaiochen pau was named by Olson and James (1991). Its type specimen is USNM 384776, a partial skull (cranium,rostrum,and mandiblelackingthe rightpost- dentaryportion), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Auwahi Cave, which is in a Holocene cave horizon in Hawaii. It is the type species of Ptaiochen.

James 1991Similar to Thambetochenin having both jaws with bony toothlike projections, while lacking the very deep rostrum of Chelychelynechen.Differs from Thambetochenin having the rostrumproportionatelyshorter,the nostrils situated fartheranteriorly,with the rostraltip anteriorto the nostril being much shorter.The midline groove on the palatalsurfaceof the rostrumis deeperand
wider.The prefrontals(lacrimals)aremuchbetterdeveloped,extendingventrally and posteriorlytowardsthe equallywell developed postorbitalprocessesso as to come much closer to encirclingthe orbit than in Thambetochen.The roof of the orbitsis not expandedlaterallyand the ventralsurfacesdo not containimpressions for salt glands as in Thambetochen.The temporal fossae and the scars for at- tachment of the dorsal neck musculatureare much less extensive than in Tham- betochen,whereasthe scarfor M. depressormandibulaeis deeperand wider.The overall outline of the cranium in lateral and posterior views is more rounded,
ratherthan being flatteneddorsallyand squaredin posteriorview as in Tham- betochen.
