Campyloprion was named by Eastman (1902) [Sepkoski's age data: C Step Sepkoski's reference number: 451]. Its type is Campyloprion annectans.

It was assigned to Edestidae by Jordan (1963); to Eugeneodontida by Sepkoski (2002); to Agassizodontidae by Zangerl (1981) and Ginter et al. (2010); and to Helicoprionidae by Itano and Lucas (2018).
