Araripichthys was named by Silva Santos (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant. Its type is Araripichthys axelrodi.
It was assigned to Crossognathiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Araripichthyidae by Maisey and Moody (2001) and Alvarado-Ortega and Brito (2011).
