R. S. De Mendoza and C. P. Tambussi 2019Diving and non-flying Anatidae of great size, bones of the forelimbs reduced, especially the car- pometacarpus. It is distinguished from other Anatidae by the following combination of characters: coracoid with the cotyla scapularis very large in relation to the facies articularis humeralis and the rest of the omal end; sulcus m. supracora- coidei is not excavated below the facies articularis humeralis; humerus with approximately 50% of the crista deltopectoralis extending distally to the merging of the crista bicipitalis with the diaphysis; carpometacarpus reduced with the distal por- tion of the inner edge of the trochlea carpalis with uniform thickness; femur strongly curved with reduced trochanter and crista supracondylaris medialis short forming a notch at its junction with the internal condyle; tibiotarsus with the sulcus m. fibularis with an anterior bony bridge and a notch on the edge of the condylus medialis; tarsometatarsus as long as the femur, with its diaphysis approximately as wide as deep, fossa parahypotarsalis medialis absent, deep sulcus extensorius, slightly curved diaphysis, trochlea metatarsi II with markedly asymmetric edges and deep sulcus in distal view but not visible in plantar view.
