Pauromys was named by Troxell (1923) [generic assignment questioned by Walsh 1997a]. It is not extant. Its type is Pauromys perditus.

It was assigned to Sciuravidae by Troxell (1923), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Dawson and Constenius (2018).
