Emys mellingi was named by Peters (1868). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Vordersdorf, which is in a Langhian mire/swamp coal in the Eibiswald Formation of Austria.
It was recombined as Paleotestudo mellingi by Lapparent de Broin et al. (2006).
