Canis fulvipes was named by Martin (1837). It is extant.

It was recombined as Vulpes fulvipes by Gerrard (1863); it was recombined as Thous fulvipes by Bourguignat (1875); it was recombined as Pseudalopex fulvipes by Cabrera (1931); it was recombined as Lycalopex fulvipes by Wilson and Reeder (2005) and Burgin et al. (2018).
