Systemodon primaevus was named by Wortman (1896). It is the type species of Homogalax.
It was recombined as Homogalax primaevus by Hay (1899), Hay (1902) and Troxell (1922); it was synonymized subjectively with Homogalax protapirinus by Radinsky (1963), Schoch (1989), Gingerich (1991) and Colbert and Schoch (1998).
