Cycadopites coxii
Taxonomy
Cycadopites coxii was named by Visscher (1966) [Diagnosis: Pollen monocolpate with approx, elliptical outline. Thin
exine with fine infrastructure. Sulcus lemniscatoid to irregularly
elliptical depending on the fossilisation. Size very constant (28—3 1 μ).
Many specimens show a wide sulcus, which
is not lemniscatoid; these forms should have been considered as
Monosulcites Cookson 1947 ex Couper 1953. However, they can be
derived from true lemniscatoid Cycadopites forms by progressive
transitions.
C. coxii differs from Cycadopites sufflavus n. sp. by its smaller size;
the size range of the latter species is also very constant (42-45 μ);
transitions were not recognized, so a separation of the species seems
justified.]. It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Single grain slide 31-HV-259; Plate XX, a microspore (pollen).
