Taxonomy
Namatomys fantasma was named by Lindsay (1968). Its type locality is Hartman Ranch (UCMP V-5814), which is in an Uintan fluvial-lacustrine sandstone/shale in the Sespe Formation of California.
It was recombined as Metanoiamys fantasma by Chiment and Korth (1996).
