Taxonomy
Merychyus smithi was named by Douglass (1903).

It was recombined as Ticholeptus smithi by Thorpe (1937); it was recombined as Ticholeptus zygomaticus smithi by Schultz and Falkenbach (1941); it was synonymized subjectively with Ticholeptus zygomaticus by Black (1961) and Morea (1981); it was recombined as Merychyus elegans smithi by Kelly and Lander (1988).
