Bucanopsis was named by Ulrich and Scofield (1897) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llde C Serp Sepkoski's reference number: 797].

It was reranked as Bellerophon (Bucanopsis) by Reed (1906); it was corrected as Bucaniopsis by Pitcher (1939).

It was assigned to Bellerophon by Reed (1906); to Bellerophontacea by Pitcher (1939); to Carinaropsinae by Knight et al. (1960); to Bellerophontida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Bucanopsinae by Wahlman (1992), Bouchet et al. (2005) and Wagner (2023).
