Amaea was named by Adams and Adams (1853) [Sepkoski's age data: K u R Sepkoski's reference number: 1248]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Scalidae by Abbass (1967); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Epitoniidae by MacNeil (1960), Dushane (1988), Todd (2001), Wienrich (2001) and Rosenberg et al. (2006).
