When: Lodgepole Formation (Madison Group), Carboniferous (358.9 - 298.9 Ma)

• The Lodgepole Formation rests unconformaly on Cambrian and Devonian age strata in the Little Belt Mountain. The Lodgepole Formation is a basal thin-beded argillaceous limestone containing two members, the lower Paine Member and an upper Woodherst Member. Above the Lodgepole is the Mission Canyon Limestone, a massive cliff forming unit.

Environment/lithology: gray, cherty/siliceous limestone and gray, argillaceous lime mudstone

• The basal 10 m of the Lodgepole Formation are dark-gray, medium-beded limestone with 2 to 6 cm thick beds are noduals of black chert. Above this, meduim-bedded light-gray limestone interbeded with argillacaeous lime mudstone. Locally red and yellow stains color these beds. Statigraphically higher, the lithology becomes varied and both light and dark bioclastic limestone is common. The buildup occurs in this sequence. Fossils abundent through the section and this formation is easily identified from float by abundent crinoid stems, brachiopods and bryozoans.
