Faxinal do Soturno, Linha São Luiz (Triassic of Brazil)

Where: Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (29.6° S, 53.4° W: paleocoordinates 37.0° S, 15.7° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Ictidosauria other zone, Caturrita Formation (Rosário do Sul Group), Norian (228.0 - 208.5 Ma)

• upper layers of the Santa Maria 2 Sequence of the Santa Maria Supersequence, corresponding lithostratigraphically to the Caturrita Formation. Ictidosauria or Mammaliamorpha Assemblage Zone (= Jachaleria Interval)

•Caturrita was originally considered Carnian-Norian in age; however, recent recalibration of the Triassic timescale suggests a Norian age (e.g. Langer et al. 2010; Brusatte et al. 2010. Earth-Science Reviews 101:68-100)

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fluvial; siltstone and fine-grained sandstone

• "low-energy fluvial environment" (Bonaparte & Sues 2006)
• "The sediments of the Faxinal do Soturno locality are formed by intercalations of siltstones and small fine to medium sandstone lenses, and there are paleosoils and desiccation cracks. Microvertebrates are concentrated in the sandstone lenses"

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

Collected in 2002

Collection methods: quarrying,
