Sister taxa: Retrophyllum spiralifolium, Retrophyllum superstes
Type specimen: Holotype: WAM P.88.96., stored in the Western Australian Museum., a sterile axis. Its type locality is West Dale, which is in an Eocene/Oligocene channel lag siltstone/sandstone in Australia.
Distribution: found only at West Dale
