Phalangeridae was named by Thomas (1888). It is extant.
It was assigned to Marsupialia by Lydekker (1894); to Diprotodontia by Flower and Lydekker (1891) and Nowak (1991); to Phalangeriformes by Springer et al. (1994); to Phalangeroidea by Pocock (1921) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Phalangerida by Munemasa et al. (2006).
