Cardium echinatum was named by Linnaeus (1767) [DISTRIBUTION: Late Miocene-Recent; Mediterranean.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Acanthocardia (Acanthocardia) echinatum by Malatesta (1963); it was recombined as Acanthocardia (Acanthocardia) echinata by Freneix et al. (1988).
