Astrea rotula was named by Goldfuss (1826). It is not extant.

It was recombined as Cryptocoenia rotula by d'Orbigny (1850); it was recombined as Orbicella rotula by Felix (1914); it was recombined as Montastrea rotula by Leloux (1999); it was recombined as Paraplacocoenia rotula by Baron-Szabo (2006).

    It was recombined as Cyphastrea orbignyana by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1857); it was recombined as Paraplacocoenia orbignyana by Beauvais (1982); it was synonymized subjectively with Paraplacocoenia rotula by Baron-Szabo (2006).
