Microgaster was named by Latreille (1804). It is extant. Its type is Microgaster balani. It is the type genus of Microgasteroidae.

It was assigned to Microgasterinae by Brues (1910); to Braconidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Microgastrinae by Whitfield et al. (2018).
