Pepsis was named by Fabricius (1805). It is extant. It is the type genus of Pepsini, Pepsinae.

It was assigned to Psammocharidae by Cockerell (1941); to Pompilidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Pepsini by Waichert et al. (2015).
