Taxonomy
Limulitella was named by Størmer (1952) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi J Hett Sepkoski's reference number: 359]. Its type is Limulites bronnii. It was considered polyphyletic by Lamsdell (2016).
It was assigned to Mesolimulidae by Størmer (1952), Størmer (1955), Gall (1971); to Xiphosurida by Sepkoski (2002); to Paleolimulidae by Bergström (1975), Dunlop et al. (2020); to Austrolimulidae by Lamsdell (2020); and to Limulidae by Lamsdell (2016), Bicknell et al. (2021).
