Lestidae was named by Calvert (1901). It is extant. Its type is Lestes.

It was assigned to Odonata by Tillyard (1916); to Zygoptera by Tillyard (1918) and Carpenter (1992); and to Lestoidea by Nel and Paicheler (1994) and Bechly (2007).
