Aphrophora was named by Germar (1821). It is extant. It is the type genus of Aphrophorinae.
It was assigned to Cercopida by Handlirsch (1910), Cockerell (1925), Piton (1936) and Piton (1940); to Aphrophorinae by Scudder (1895) and Becker-Migdisova (1964); and to Aphrophorini by Dmitriev (2020) and Borodin and Borodina (2021).
