Palaeobrachypogon was named by Borkent (1995). Its type is Palaeobrachypogon vetus.

It was assigned to Ceratopogonidae by Borkent (1995); and to Ceratopogonini by Borkent and Wirth (1997), Borkent (2013), Borkent and Dominiak (2020).
