Pithonoton was named by von Meyer (1842) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo J Tith Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Prosopon (Pithonoton) marginatum.

It was reranked as Prosopon (Pithonoton) by Von Meyer (1842), Étallon (1859).

It was assigned to Prosopon by Von Meyer (1842), Étallon (1859); and to Goniodromitidae by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2008), Armstrong et al. (2009), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2012).
