Zanthopsis was named by M'Coy (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes T Ol-l]. Its type is Cancer leachii. It is the type genus of Zanthopsidae.
It was assigned to Cancridae by Bell (1858); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Xanthidae by Rathbun (1926), Maury (1930), Van Straelen (1933), Stenzel (1934), Rathbun (1935), Bachmeyer and Mundlos (1968), Kooser and Orr (1973), Squires (1999), Schweitzer and Feldmann (2002); and to Zanthopsidae by Schweitzer (2003), Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Luque et al. (2017), Schweitzer et al. (2018).
