Anacaena was named by Thomson (1859). It is extant. It is the type genus of Anacaenini.
It was assigned to Hydrophilidae by Solórzano Kraemer (2007), Fikáček and Engel (2011); and to Anacaenini by Short and Fikáček (2013), Arriaga-Varela et al. (2021).
