Moselopteridae was named by Lamsdell et al. (2010). Its type is Moselopterus. It is the type family of Moselopteroidea.

It was assigned to Moselopteroidea by Dunlop et al. (2013), Dunlop et al. (2020), Lamsdell (2025).
