Taxonomy
Lepidotes was named by Agassiz (1832) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 2,1066]. Its type is Cyprinus elvensis. It is the type genus of Lepidotidae.
It was corrected as Lepidotus by Schaeffer (1947); it was misspelled as Lepidotus by Rayner (1948), Lapparent (1955), Gardiner (1960), Tabaste (1963), Wenz (1967), Delsate (1997), Goodwin et al. (1999), Sepkoski (2002), Friedman et al. (2010), López-Arbarello (2012) and Nelson et al. (2016).
It was assigned to Lepidotidae by Hay (1902); to Semionotiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Semionotidae by Woodward (1895), Woodward (1916), Schaeffer (1947), Rayner (1948), Lapparent (1955), Gardiner (1960), Tabaste (1963), Wenz (1967), Delsate (1997), Goodwin et al. (1999) and Friedman et al. (2010); and to Lepisosteiformes by López-Arbarello (2012) and Nelson et al. (2016).
