It was assigned to Laridae by Mlikovsky (2002); to Charadriiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stercorariidae by Wetmore (1956), Carroll (1988), Olson and Rasmussen (2001), Warheit (2002), Dyke and Walker (2005), Smith (2011), del Hoyo et al. (2014), Clements et al. (2017).
