Taxonomy
Proviverra was named by Rütimeyer (1862). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Proviverrinae.
It was assigned to Oxyaenidae by Cope (1880) and Cope (1880); to Proviverridae by Scott (1892) and Hay (1902); to Hyaenodontinae by Van Valen (1967); to Hyaenodontidae by Rutimeyer (1862), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Solé et al. (2009); and to Proviverrinae by Peigné et al. (2007), Solé (2013), Solé et al. (2014) and Solé and Mennecart (2019).
