Taxonomy
Herpestes was named by Illliger (1811) [non Herpestes Cuvier 1829]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Herpestidae.
It was assigned to Viverrina by Gray (1825); to Herpestinae by Mivart (1882), Allen (1919), Hendey (1974); to Viverridae by Allen (1929), Carroll (1988); and to Herpestidae by Kurten (1968), Geraads (1997), Werdelin and Peigne (2010).
