Machairodus was named by Kaup (1833).
It was synonymized subjectively with Drepanodon by Cope (1880); it was corrected as Machaerodus by Ameghino (1902).
It was assigned to Machairodontinae by Hay (1902), Bjork (1970), Sotnikova (1991), Martin (1998), Roussiakis and Theodorou (2003), Peigne et al. (2005); to Felidae by Kaup (1833), Ameghino (1902), Carroll (1988), Werdelin and Peigne (2010), Koufos (2012); to Machairodontini by Berta and Galiano (1983), Wallace and Hulbert (2013); and to Homotheriini by Slater and Van Valkenburgh (2008), Antón et al. (2013).
