Taxonomy

Hesperocyon was named by Scott (1890). It is not extant. Its type is Prohesperocyon wilsoni.

It was considered a nomen nudum by Matthew (1918).

It was assigned to Canidae by Scott (1890), Gustafson (1986), Carroll (1988), Bryant (1993) and Lofgren et al. (2020); and to Hesperocyoninae by Wang (1994), Wang and Tedford (1996), Wang et al. (2008) and Korth et al. (2022).

Species

H. coloradensis, H. gregarius (syn. Nanodelphys mcgrewi, Cynodictis hylactor, Cynodictis paterculus, Amphicyon gracilis)

Synonyms

Alloeodectes was named by Russell (1984).

It was synonymized subjectively with Hyaenodon by Korth (1994); it was synonymized subjectively with Hesperocyon by Bryant (1991) and Wang (1994).
Pseudocynodictis was named by Schlosser (1902). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Hesperocyon by Green (1952), Macdonald (1970), Clark and Guensburg (1972) and Wang (1994).
