Nasua was named by Storr (1780). It is extant.

It was assigned to Procyonina by Gray (1825); to Procyoninae by Baskin (1998); to Procyonini by Baskin (2004); and to Procyonidae by Storr (1780), Wortman and Matthew (1899), Carroll (1988), Hollister (2000) and Salles et al. (2006).
