Palaeophyllum was named by Billings (1858). Its type is Paleophyllum hashimoto.
It was corrected as Paleophyllum by Blazer (1975).
It was assigned to Favistellidae by Reiman (1958); to Streptelasmatinae by Hill (1956), Pestana (1960); to Corallinaceae by Blazer (1975); to Stauriidae by Merriam (1972), Merriam (1973), Gierlowski and Langenheim (1985); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
It was corrected as Paleophyllum by Blazer (1975).
