Taxonomy
Agriotherium was named by Wagner (1837) [type South Asian A. sivalensis; accidentally ]. Its type is Agriotherium sivalensis.

It was assigned to Agriotheriinae by Hendey (1974); to Hemicyoninae by Qiu et al. (1991); to Ursavini by Hunt (1998); to Ursidae by Wagner (1837), Kurten (1968), Carroll (1988), Salesa et al. (2006), Werdelin and Peigne (2010); and to Agriotheriini by Chorn and Hoffman (1978), Jiangzuo et al. (2023).
