Taxonomy
Machairodus hesperus was named by Gazin (1933). Its type specimen is 12614, a mandible (partial left ramus), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Megantereon hesperus by Schultz and Martin (1970), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Berta and Galiano (1983) and Martin et al. (1988).

C. L. Gazin 1933Size distinctly small. Lower carnassial slender and
tapering posteriorly. Protoconid shearing blade long. Angle between paraconid and protoconid shearing blades relatively acute. Very slight vestigial heel or metaconid present. Anterior portion of masseteric fossa extends forwardto point
below notch of M1,and upwardnearly to tooth cingulum.
