Confusastrea was named by D'Orbigny (1849).

It was synonymized subjectively with Complexastrea by Wells (1956); it was misspelled as Confusastraea by Sepkoski (2002), Kiessling (2008).

It was assigned to Scleractinia by Osberger (1954), Sepkoski (2002); and to Montlivaltiidae by Kiessling (2008).
